Down the Line

2023

An interactive installation that took place for the Fete de la Musique, Paris. Spanning the distance of 200 metres, we created an acoustic tin can telephone, establishing a direct line between two bridges, inviting spectators to communicate and connect with each other across the divide. For many centuries the acoustic telephone was also known as the ‘Lovers phone’ as two people could use it to talk to each other when they are further apart than an ordinary speaking voice will carry. It also meant that what they said could be whispered or private. The first string phone was made in 1667 by the scientist Robert Hooke.
